Projects that take root locally.

We work with local partners, clear budgets and step-by-step implementation. Each project should be able to continue with available resources and be replicated throughout the region.

Coffee–banana agroforestry and additional income

The project helps a low-income rural community use a hillside plot productively while protecting the soil.

What is being implemented

  • Preparation and planting of an area of approximately 0.25 hectares
  • Combination of coffee, bananas and complementary tree species
  • Trenches and site-appropriate planting lines for erosion control
  • Ten beehives, a secured apiary and swarm catcher boxes
  • A poultry unit with rainwater harvesting as an additional source of income
  • Securing and registering the project land

Status on 20 August 2026: Rainwater harvesting is operational, the apiary has been fenced and, according to the local partner, coffee planting has been completed. Banana and complementary tree planting is continuing.

School of Sustainable Smallholder Farming

Together with YWAM Arua, we are planning a 22-week, practice-oriented course for 15 adults from the local host community and people with refugee experience.

Course priorities

  • Soil fertility, composting, seed and crop production
  • Water management, erosion control and climate adaptation
  • Agroforestry, home gardens and basic livestock keeping
  • Nutrition, post-harvest handling, marketing and farm management
  • Personal kitchen gardens and practical learning on existing plots

The school can operate independently of the planned demonstration farm. Existing rooms, garden plots, water access and practical training areas are available on the YWAM Arua site.

Arua Agroforestry Demonstration Farm

The planned demonstration farm complements the agricultural school as a long-term learning site, but is not required for the course to operate.

On a degraded plot, soil protection, compost, mulch, living hedges and timber, fruit and soil-improving trees will be combined in a visible system. Funding is requested and accounted for separately from the school project.
